What You'll Need

  • A Mailgun account with at least one verified sending domain
  • Access to your Boxset dashboard (Integrations section)
  • Admin access in Mailgun to create API keys and configure webhooks

Part 1: Connect Mailgun to Boxset

Part 2: Set Up Event Tracking (Webhook)

Mailgun signs all webhook payloads using HMAC with a Webhook Signing Key (found in Mailgun Dashboard → Settings → API Security → HTTP Webhook Signing Key). This key is different from your API key. Boxset will work without it, but for stricter security you can provide it when connecting: paste it in the optional Signing Key field during setup.

Troubleshooting

"Invalid API key" error

  • Make sure you're using the Private API key, not the public validation key
  • Check your Mailgun region setting in Boxset matches your account (US vs EU)
  • EU accounts use api.eu.mailgun.net — selecting the wrong region will cause authentication failures

"Invalid signature" on webhooks

  • Mailgun uses a Webhook Signing Key that is separate from your API key
  • Find it in Mailgun Dashboard → Settings → API Security → HTTP Webhook Signing Key
  • Update your Boxset connection and paste the signing key in the Signing Key field
  • If you don't provide a signing key, Boxset accepts webhooks using URL-based security (the unique connection ID in your webhook URL)

Webhooks not delivering events

  • Verify the webhook URL is correct for each event type
  • Mailgun configures webhooks per domain — make sure you've set up the correct domain
  • Use Mailgun's Test Webhook button to diagnose connection issues
  • Check Mailgun's Logs section for webhook delivery failures

Getting events from only some domains

  • Each Mailgun domain needs its own webhook configuration
  • Go to Sending → Webhooks and switch between domains using the dropdown to configure each one
